SUMMER.. i texted Steve about a great possibility of film guild resurrection. That we can make this happen! That we will be bringing the first Oscars to Philippines. And in delight and smiles, many said, "that's the fighting spirit". But i answered, "No. It's the plan!".

Many weeks passed and we got nothing (yet) to show. The vision in our soul seems like an illustration for all that heard my braggadocio. Sad, sad, sad :(

WHILE system of a down is accompanying me while im staring blank in the sky, the soundtrack of Zorro (yez, starring richard g) keeps playing in my head. How cool is that.. Janno sings no other lyrics except for "Zorro.. Zorro..", ad nauseam! haha :) and im not being sarcastic here, honest! Nakaka-LSS, repa!
Last year, when i first hear DLSL's alma mater hymn.. I asked "why the short (and few) lyrics?". Now, Zorro beats that! :) And i keep on singing it. Sa isip ko as well, with volume :)

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! ..how can i even put it to words?! Repa, putang ina.. ang galing mo! Im giving you 100 for this assignment. And this is my first time to give a hundred grade. Of course, in objective-type exams, students can always have that numbers. But for an article so subjective.. this is my fuckin 1st time to give 100. Yes, the content is admirable. But as im always saying in class, at times (and yes, many times).. the message is the massage. It is how you say it. It's the rhythm. Then comes balls. Then comes sincerity (another important consideration).

Close second is Sol.. I gave you 98. Class, you may want to read their assignments. Im not forcing you. Read it at your leisure time :) ..Forcing is for lame-oh! ..Is is not education. The very reason military discipline is way too hard for me. Philosophically speaking, there is no discipline except self-discipline. For what is it called if ain't from one's self?! That's no fuckin discipline. That is fear. Same's true with education. If you don't want to go to class, then fuck.. don't! Go somewhere else that can satisfy more your heart :) My previous students know that. And i know that more or less, you know im honest saying it. But that's another story, or blogspot post :)

I am mentioning these things in lieu of a comment. That some indie films were watched because professors dictate it. Yes, you're correct. Come the Cinemalaya month, throngs of students will go to CCP or UP to watch indie. But for grade's sake. Fuckin sad. I remember when i was in san beda. First sunday mass is a must! Attendance will be checked. But damn the attendance.. the hell with it. I will go if i want and wont if i don't. And mass attendance (or the lack of it) is one of the reasons i almost wasn't able to graduate on-time. Sagrado katoliko ako at naniniwala ako sa Dyos pero hindi ako relehiyoso. Our history will tell us that Roman Catholicism's first agenda is not religion. religion is their instrument. But not the end goal. For what? For land conquer. In case you're not familiar with Magellan. But of course, i know you do. His philippine arrival (the month and date, not the year :)) is also my birthdate :)

Now going back to indie and mainstream and piracy and other shitty-shitty-bang!-bang!..

Thank you Sol for mentioning (and yes, some others have similar points).. that whether it is indie or mainstream, let's make no big fuzz about it. Back were the years when there was no category of such.. Pinoy cinema as creators of good movies, period. Insiang, Itim, Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag, etc.. They are mainstream films shown for the masses. Even Joey Gosienfiao's Temptation Island and other flicks are now considered cult classics with its own taste and novelty.

Movies and mainstream TV shows, like love, is an opium.

A number of you were saying that some movies don't have moral standpoint or something to that effect. I hope you will not get me wrong. But if im wrong, then i want to hear your side too :) ..Class, i don't need moral lessons to enjoy a movie, to say that a film is great. Yes, there are movies that show hard-bitting realities. There are movies that can awaken patriotism. There are movies that push change. Yes, a bonus! But not a prerequisite. Despite the popular adage that movies or art in general should push a moral stance.. I can say otherwise. Let the moralists do it. Let them formulate rules and do hypocrisies. And i honestly think that it is the beauty of art. We express and communicate. If what we want to say are rotten ideologies and cruel intentions, so be it. There are no moral or immoral books. Only bad storytelling!

The masses are not watching indie films. And it is not their fault. They are not entertained! Wala silang mahita sa panonood ng mga malalalim na istoryang wala namang nakakaintindi! Some indie writers and directors are so full of themselves that they are forgetting to communicate what they want to say. Mga pelikulang kelangan pa ng open forum para makapagpaliwanag ang writer and director kung baket ganun ang eksena, kung baket ganun ang kwento.. Tapos dun pa lang maiintindihan ng mga nanood na ah kaya pala ganun yung chever, kaya pala ganun yung keme keme..

Actually, that was not insulting to audience's understanding level.. That was fuckin' pathetic in the creators' standpoint! kaya lang naintindihan dahil nagpaliwanag ka na?! The film should speak for itself. Kung maganda yun.. e di yun yun.. Maganda! Kung panget, e di panget! Kung nakakalito.. e di nakakalito. Quentin Tarantino don't owe me an explanation what's happening to Pulp Fiction. Tim Burton need not spell out what's the matter with Nightmare Before Christmas or Corpse' Bride. We see the film and experience it and that's it.. No fuckin bloody explanation from creators! What you can not show in your film, you can not offset it by having eloquent clarifications in each every fuckin showing of your fuckin "brilliant" film. So "brilliant" that only you (and you alone) can understand.

sorry if im saying too much about indie. this is a subject very close to my heart. skip this part if you don't want to read this. actually, you can skip the whole post, if you want. just ask your classmates what grade i gave you :)

anyway, to continue..

i can always understand why mainstream cinema lacks experimentation. you know that it is because the producers are too afraid to try something new because they think it might scare away the paying masses. our mainstream directors and writers may (or may not) know that they are doing shit. but they are paid in doing so. borrowing ninja man's analogy (a friend and also an abs-cbn writer), if you're a hired killer.. you will be killing the person your financier tells you in the manner that he wants. because you were hired precisely for that purpose. if you don't want it, then don't. but of course, he will be giving you the payment no more.

and in the case of indie.. wala na ngang kumokontrol sa ideas nila.. pwede na ngang maging malaya.. wala den namang maibigay na pambihira at kagilagilalas na pelikula! (but of course, save to few that can deliver the goodies)

baka naman kasi, the problem here is not the control (of big producers).. the problem here is creativity! e sino ba naman (in general) ang mga indie writers and directors na yan?! ..either natanggal sa mainstream network (kasi masyadong far-out at hindi naman magaganda ang ideas.. mga ideas na wala namang ibang nakakaintindi kundi ang sarili lang) or mga apply nang apply sa mainstream networks pero hindi natatanggap! mga walang alam sa komunikasyon! naalala ko nung ininterview ko dati si Joey Reyes, andami dami daw indie directors, nakagawa lang ng isang short film na hindi mo alam kung saan ipinalabas.. ang yayabang na! sabi pa nya, being a filmmaker doesnt comprise of a single movie.. it is a body of works, a culture of excellence!

BY the way, some have interesting movies to tell..

Some of you mentioned Maximo Oliveros, Magnifico, Public Enemies, etc.. Yes, i like those movies too. In the case of Public Enemies.. Yes, i want to watch it too.. Syempre, si Idol yun! Johnny Depp! I will aslo recommend den pala Ato Bautista's Sa Aking Pagkagising Mula sa Kamulatan. It is written by Shugo Praico. The writer of abs-cbn's series' Spirits. Shugo knows indie, as well the mainstream. Same reason with maximo oliveros. Its producer (raymond lee) and writer (michiko yamamoto).. matagal sila sa mainstream and alam den nila ang inide.. so ayun :) By the way, Michiko is also the writer of Magnifico. Oh-ha! :)

Sorry pala sa mga im disagreeing ha :) but rest assured, hindi yun nakakaapekto sa grades. as i said po, we are discussing things for discussion's sake. (and uhmm.. yes, for enlightenment na den :)). it's 2 something in the morning, 'just finished reading ricky lee's para kay B.

it's awesome!

ricky lee knows the mainstream, of course. but as well have that indie spirit of being meaningful. u can remember his works with brocka, bernal and other notable directors of the past. of

course, many of his works (as writer, and later creative consultant for abs-cbn series) are wanting (if not outright lowly). but i am hell sure that he knows it. that there are quite a number of works ur doing for the money. truth to tell (and im not ricky lee), that majority of what i've written for abs-cbn, gma and some other networks or magazine are bullshit and shameful. but i need it to keep afloat. it is still writing, at least. yes, consuelo de bobo!

anyway, going back to ricky lee's novel (his first).. im glad that i was able to read it. my long-time passion of writing (a novel) has its desire again burning after reading a good book. i will fuckin' write!

of course, there are some wazzup segments that i am cool and telling friends that i did it. or my edit in pinoy mano-mano. its core market is male so we were allowed to peg it dirty and raw. but teleserye (like kung fu kids).. my god! i rest my case. i just hope that this post will not be read by my bosses in a.b.s.. :)

save to a few (very few) that had some rawness and/or with mtv-polished edit, majority of my eat bulaga segments are thankfully anonymous. and of course, i understand, its target market dictates that we were ought to give that certain taste.

and while at it, reading para kay B, im listening to eraserheads. no doubt the 90's, my generation's, music definition of cool, depth and mainstream success. so successful that until now, their music still echoes the warmth it had way back the last decade.

ang mainstream, pokpok na pokpok. masyadong subo. masyadong binobobo ang masa. ang indie films naman ngayon, masyadong masturbation lang. self-serving. ang direktor lang at writer ng certain na pelikulang yun ang nakakaintindi ng gusto nilang sabihin. that it's too personal na sana sila na lang ang nanood.

when was the last time u saw a good-meaningful indie film that audience can relate? syempre hindi tayo pare-pareho ng taste pero kung ako tatanungin nyo, Maximo Oliveros is one. May importanteng laman at may tamang timpla para ma-interest ang audience. syempre hindi ko naman lahat nasundan at napanood lahat ng indie films na lumalabas ngayon, pero yung iba pa na mga napapanood ko.. either parang xtension lang ng star cinema at regal (hindi naman indie ang spirit, mga cliche na story pa den naman) o kaya'y nagpapanggap na indie (hindi naman indie.. digital lang. yes, like viva and regal) o kaya nama'y mga indie talaga (ang budget and ang depth) pero hanggang dun na nga lang.. meaningful na sana, may napakagandang gustong sabihin pero (at malaking PERO).. boring naman. sinong manonood nyan? mga kamag-anak? kahit pa kamag-anak, aantukin den!

and going back to para kay B and eraserheads.. dalawa sa kokonting kasal ng lalim at communication.

it will always be my fervent hope that soonest, all artists (and yes, communication students) will realize that arts can not be a sustainable endeavor that can keep us afloat if we continue doing indie the mowelfund way or the cinemalaya way. lalo nating inilalayo si aling bebang kung patuloy tayong gagawa ng mga makakabuluhang pelikula pero nakakantok. si aling bebang ang bibili ng tiket o ng mga pirated na kopya ng mga pelikula at palabas natin kung magugustuhan nila. kung hindi sila aantukin! arts for arts sake na lang ang mangyayari kung hindi tayo bubuhayin (financially) ng passion natin :(

mga cultured na mga matrona, may hawak na wine at may kasamang maliit na aso; mga anak ng mayayaman na nakakapamasyal sa broadway, makikinis ang balat at may pekeng twang; o kaya'y ang mga tropang artists ng gumawang artists -- sila! ..sila na lang.. yes, ang mga "cultured" (with quote, unquote sa cultured) ang magpapalakpakan sa mga palabas kahit nakakaantok, ang magtatapikan sa balikat at magpupurihan kung hindi natin ibubuka ang arts.

anyway.. to continue, bago ko pa malimutan.. u3a, for radio prod.. your assignment number 1.. submit a radio drama (narrative) concept. individual. yes, per student. we know what we are looking for.. kug tv man yan, or radio or dyaryo.. let's consider its USP and UUESP. please don't tell me that u were absent nung pinagusapan yan. pero sasbihin ko na den. usp is unique selling point. uuesp is unique, universal emotional selling point. lahat ng kwento ay love story kahit ano pang genre! nagpapatayang action na love ang pinaghuhugutan, mga nagmumulto at nakaktakot na monster dahil may emotional needs. etc.. etc.. walang character na tumatawa lang at sumisigaw ng "masama ako hahaha!" ,lahat ng tao, akala nila, sila ang bida. may mga pagkakamali nga lang sa decision in life. pero lahat ng character ay lovable characters. hindi cardboard characters.

the group of louben: ayusin nyo yung take-off point. yung itinakas ni mudraks ang kanyang anak chenes. as i said kanina, medyo hindi believable sa audience ang emotional logic na kukunin ang bunso at iiwan yung 5 years old. either ibahin nyo or ayusin nyo. so dz thursday, pati na den yung sinasabi nyong twists and turns ng istorya.. kahit storyline pa lang.. submit nyo na den :)

the group of neeks: okay yung idea ni jofra na simula sa uspaan nung pudraks ni babae and pudraks ni lalake, may papatayin. i-consider nyo yung mga sinabi ko like kung may reveal sa character, sana dun den lang yung reveal sa audience para sabay si character at ang audience na makaramdam ng kung anumang emosyon yun. submit it this thursday den. yung revised chenes nyo. storyline. yung kanina, actually, hindi lang concept yun.. storyline na yun. so ganun ulet, this time revised na :)

the group of chrizel: gawan nyo na ng sequence treatment. sequence treatment is script na wala pang dialogue. kung kaya nyo na this thursday, maganda :) kung hindi pa kayang tapusin, at least masimulan na (kasi una naman kayo e).. pagtulungan nating buuin ang sequence treatment this thursday.

at habang ninanamnam ko pa ulet ang para kay B, at nakikinig ng minsan, harana, suntok sa bwan, pare ko, at iba pang 3H3ADS music.. iniisip ko den na sana'y wala sa atin ang magka-swine flu, sana'y kung wala man kayong matutunan sakin this sem.. sana'y ma-entertain kayo :) ..iniisip ko den.. napanood nyo na kaya ang part 3 (the latest) ng maricar - hayden scandal, the maui taylor scandal (hindi pa nababalita sa tv, mas una ako sa balita hehe), alam nyo kaya na digital broadcast na ang buong U.S. na nag-start last week, etc etc..

iniisip ko den pala na siguro, ako pa lang ang may ako mismo dog tag sa buong lasalle lipa :) hehe :)

madami pa akong iniisip pero it is either too green or too dramatic that it shouldn't be here. at least in this post. at least, for the time being.

hmm, the last time na nanuod akoh ng sine was last week.nuod akoh ng "drag me to hell". hindi po sya horror para sa akin.i thought it was cheesy and grows..yes, nakakabigla sya but still, it's not a good horror movie.the last local movie that ive seen was shake rattle and roll X.uhm, that was december last year..itwas a good movie because it had a good story, and nakakatawa tlga ang hot na hot na marian rivera dun.. i thought she can make more movies or seryes in that comic role..

bago ang point koh, i would like to say na i only watch movies(sa cnehan)every once in a while..i will only spend 100+php sa cnehan if i know na mgnda tlga ang movie(maganda in a sense na ok ang storya at ok ang technicalities..).

maliban na lang po sa valkyrie ni tom cruise..though mejo bgo sya, for me, isa syang "good-meaningful" movie because of its historical value..but then again, the people of russia wrote that story at hindi ang eheads..

speaking of indie films.. yung kay ato bautista na pagkagising sa kamulatan (di ko sure yung exact title.. basta, parang ganyan).. nagustuhan ko den :) katulad ni ato na sobrang angas, ganun den yung movie nya. written by shugo praico (also the writer of spirits. yung tv series nun sa a.b.s na may soundtrack na you'll be safe here).

may mga totoo pa den na indie. eto yung walang back-up ng mga malalaking studio. philosophically speaking, yun ang indie. regal and viva digital movies are not indie films. si mother lily pa den (for regal) and vic (for viva) ang nasusunod dun. kung may konti mang leeway.. yun na nga yun.. konti ang.. so wala pa den ang true meaning ng inide. mga tinipid na studio movies pa den yun :)

kelan mangyayari na hindi na nakakabobo ang mainstream? sa ibang bansa, gumaganda ang direction. let's say anime. anlulufet ng kwento.. mabubuwang ka sa isorya.. and yet, the mainstream network and mainstream audience are supporting it (meaning, are producing it), are watching it. sa europe, ganun den.. dumadami ang pedro almadovar, lars von trier, etc.. mga malulufet na movies pero tangkilik ng mainstream.. in US, yes.. entertainment pa den pero may laman naman ng konti kesa sa pinoy. pero napakadami deng basura pa (still) from them. and dun (sa US) naka-base ang idea and cultural meaning of beauty ng mga pinoy.. pag galing US! napakahabang edukasyon sa masa ang kelangan. matagal na matagal pa kung mangyayari man. kasi sa school pa nga lang, ilang school or institution lang ba, or teachers ang open minded sa mga mapagpalayang concepts? pag nakakita ng suso kahit maganda naman ang istorya, ..bawal sa bata! my god! college na! they think students are ignoramus. they always mistaken religiosity and catholicism to blindness. hay nakoh :) the miseducation of filipino students as dean jorge bacobo puts it!

the problem with many indie filmmakers?

alam nyo ba ang majority ng mga nasa indie ngayon? sila yung mga hindi natanggap ng mga networks (or nasipa) because of their far-out ideas. their ideas na ipinipilit pro wala namang masang makakaintindi. so gumagawa ng outlet. at walang pakelam kung maintindihan ng audience or hindi. which i think is wrong. para san ang pelikula? papano tayo mabubuhay nyan? di ba dapat may transition, may education of the masses.. kahit unti unti lang.. hayaan muna nating maintindihan, malaman ni aling bebang na ah, maganda naman pala ang indie.. hayaan muna natin na ma-entertain sila.. unti unti.. darating den ang time na maaapreciate na den nila ang mga malalalim na kwento! but first, let's entertain them. let's konek first.

We all know that "piracy" is a crime..not only here in the Philippines but also in other countries. It is considered stealing something from somebody's work. The government is doing its best to fight piracy...but not good enough to avoid it. It(piracy) provides a more rewarding viewing experience for its viewers,same quality but lower in price. Piracy technology today can copy the quality of the original one,unlike before that it cannot.Needless to say, most of these films are pirated DVDs found in stores which
have sprung up all over the places,also the music CDs.

So whats my point of view?
Piracy is the best distribution system lol!!! im glad that piracy exist!!though i know that it makes our film...music or other industry weak. Because I myself love to watch movies,anime or even concerts that is recorded, but not that much in music..because i usually download songs from the internet...i dont know if it is considered as piracy...if it is not..."YEAH"!!! but if it is piracy..."I Dont Care"lol!!!
I know that a lot of producers are experiencing bankruptcy because of piracy...and piracy is bad. But lets try to look on its good side...many people in our country suffer from financial support, eventhough they have a job,their sallary is too small for them for a living...maybe for food it is enough,but we all know that we people also need a "want"!!!!and music,films and other stuff is considered as a want...so for those people whose income is not that big they choose to buy pirated cds,dvds etc. to satisfy their wants in life...and as of for me...well im still a student..im still unemployed and im only counting on my allowance...but maybe in time i will not buy any pirated cds anymore...pero sir pad album ng hale original binibili ku...haha

Ang pelikulang puno ng saplot ay ang mainstream. May ilang mga pelikula na nais lang ay pasiyahin at patawanin ang manonood ngunit nasaan ang value? Nasaan ang lesson na dapat ang buhat buhat ng manonood matapos ang pelikula. Nakakalungkot lang isipin na may mga pelikula na nais lang ay kumita. Yun ang priority nila. Yun ang para sa kanila ay ang kayamanan. Ngunit mali. Ang kayamanan na dapat ay ang makita na nasiyahan at may natutunan ang bawat nakapanood sa pelikula.

May mga mainstream movies naman na maganda. Award winning. Sa una patatawanin ka ngunit pag nakita na ang tunay na problema, ayan na, kukurutin na ang puso hanggang sa mapagtanto mo na naramdaman mo ang pelikula. May mga pelikula na para bang ginigising ang bawat manonood na tila ba sinasabi na “Hoy!manhid ka ba?” at bigla nalang mapapaisip ang nakapanood paglabas ng sinehan na “Oo nga, nadala ako dun ah!” sabay hila sa napulot na aral sa pelikula. Hanep. Sana lahat ng pelikula ganun para lahat may maiuwing aral. Ayun ang gusto ko.

Ang pangalawa naman ay ang pelikulang hubad. Para sakin ito ang Indie. Ito ang mukha ng tunay na mundo, un nga lang malalim ang bawat aral o mensahe na gustong sabihin. Ito ay hubad sa pagpapakita sa malalim na storya sa likod ng magulo at nakakapigang pag-iisip sa mga bawat eksena na nais ipakita ng may gawa. Tila hindi na ako makagalaw sa upuan ko sapagkat lahat ng eksena ay mahalaga sa pagbuo at pagwawakas ng istorya. Minsan nalulunod na ako dahil sa lalim ng nais iparating, buti nakakaahon pa ako. i don't agree with that school of thought na dapat lahat ng pelikula ay may morale value. yes, tanging yaman? yes, may magagandang sinasabi about life.. yes, na dapat optimistic ang mga tao..

uhmm.. okay den naman yun. but its not the end all of it. kung may ganun, ayus.. kung wala.. walang problema. for me kasi, hindi dapat extension ng simbahan at magulang ang pelikula. leave it to moralists na mangaral at magdikta ng kung anong tingin nila ng tama o mali. in the first place, baket may monopolyo ba ng tama? may monopolyo ba ng beauty?

I got it. I'll stick with piracy for now. Not like I have anything against making comments on movies and such, but I think I'll do more of a job on Piracy rather than mainstream and indie films. xD

So to start of, I think Piracy being a crime is too fucked up and over-rated, no offense of course. Sure it's nice to have the original stuff (Heck I even buy original Disney Classics at this age) due to how the quality of the movie comes out, or how nice the sounds are plus it's often complete with those nifty features and behind the scenes, but come on, you cant expect everyone to buy the original stuff. We're already entering a time where people love to pleasure themselves but lacks money to do so. So what do people do? Go to the Pirates ("Arg! Mateys!" xD) and go buy pirated DVDs, VCDs, and just some normal CDs.

As much as people (mostly the government, "concerned citizens" *mutters: Money grabbing bastards* and then some), wants to put a stop to piracy...they cant. They have to consider the majority's position. Not every one has money, and the income most people earn remains at a stagnant level. So how can they buy a single movie DVD which costs 750php? A single music CD which costs around 450php, or an original game disc which falls at around 1500k and above? Unless you're rich or a fanatic like I am, you wont give a damn about the original. And this is why the piracy business is thriving in the beautiful yet corrupt country...the Philippines.

I guess for me, if they want their CDs bought, they could lower the prices a bit. People go to Pirates in order to enjoy a good movie, good sounds, and good games for an affordable price. Compare one CD that costs 750php to four CDs that costs at around 150php. You know where people will go. Plus, they can still bargain with our friendly neighborhood pirates and get it for a much much cheaper price.

Actually, this makes it more convenient. Ah, the wonders of the human mind. How to bring pleasure to dear costumers and possible patrons while earning some cold hard cash in the process. It's a good racket. I admit, I also buy the pirated stuff since the box sets are very expensive. Piracy brings joy to the people, but not to the industry. But I think people could hardly care about the industry as long as they were supplied with the goods. And it seems that this time, the masses have spoken:

Illegal means are the best way to go about it!

And in my opinion, Piracy is one of the best damn things the illegal biz(My kind o' biz xD) presented to the people. It's cheap, it's affordable, it's accessible, it comes in various amounts and it also comes in fun sizes! *is referring to package size* So what's not to like about that?

So for me, who has budget problems...piracy is no crime. Hell, it's a gift to human kind. xDDDD

a hard hitting foreign language band (foreign as in alien sounding for we don't fucking know what the lyrics are saying) but nonetheless, soothing..

it is nice to hear that from time to time such a band of hard core orientation are doing love songs of melodic proportion. yes, maybe i'm exaggerating. ohne dich and rosenrot are not your outright ballad we hear from mark bautista or sarah g, but the hell! but then again, and of course, it is just me. we can always remind ourselves that there's none the monopoly of truth and beauty. you know what i mean. parents or religions that say they are the only way and the only truth are not only misdirected and misinforming you.. they are, as plain as it sounds, ..wrong!

Other angles can be (2) the pronouncement of Mayweather Sr after the fight, Hatton's trainor, saying that his ward should retire after that loss; (3) who's next for Pacman; (4) the hospitalization of Hatton after the fight; (5) the loss that silenced the British crowd -- probably the loudest boxing crowd; (6) Arum saying that Pacquiao is the greatest of all time -- even better than Muhammad Ali; (7) the unretirement of Mayweather Jr; (8) ang halos walang crime-rate na Pilipinas tuwing may laban si Pacquiao; (9) ang namatay na lalake here in Batangas sa panonood ng laban n Pacman; (10) ang reklamo ng mga manonood sa GMA 7 tungkol sa napakahabang commercial; etc.

Except for item 1, choose an angle to write. And yez, ..write for broadcast, not for print. Sa isa-submit nyo sa Wednesday, midterm exam parts 1 and 2, hard copy, please indicate kung anong anggulo ang pinili nyo.. Or if you think it's too obvious naman, then we're kewl with it :)

Don't copy paste from net. Please, don't do it. You might want to read a previous post "TV FRAUD", my bye-bye remarks to U4A. Dun ko kasi ipinaliwanag ang ilang chenes regarding originality. And the harsh consequences that should kung hindi pala orig. I am very particular sa originality pagdating sa mga ganitong chenes. Nasabi ko na den sa inyo na kung nakikita ko man ang estudyante na nagkokopyahan or something to that effect on exams, usually, nangingiti na lang ako.. Kasi malamang ay ganun den ang hitsura ko nung nangongopya den ako way back my school days. But here's the rub.. hindi pa ako nahuhuli.. ever!

I hope the summer rain's over. I have this pseudo-science thinking that we are shield to swine flu virus as long it doesn't rain much or the temp goes down. The very reason Philippines never had the serious problem with SARS. December or January may be a wary month for air virus but came the summer in a tropical country, temp rises up and virus (or protozoa or amoeba or whatever cold-fucking-shet-flu-inducer) will be out of the picture! Virus can't live in hot weather. But then again, it is a pseudo-science. I just made it up. But if you think it ain't true, then.. disprove it!

This is also my welcome post to you my U2A students this summer. Actually, I think this is my welcome post to you my dear U2A students, period. We never had the chance to "talk" much here in blogspot last sem. Last year's U4A students, during their stay here in DLSL had a great time "talking" to me here in blogspot. They like the idea that they can talkback to me anonymously in blogspot. Some with their real names but some with their pseudo names posting their comments with regards to class, to me, to arts, and life in general. Things that they are too shy to say while on class and in person. Things that they forgot to ask while I'm around. From important to the trivial or mundane to downright controversial to bullshit. No, this is not to compare you with them. But to say that I am encouraging you to post your comments here. You can check their remarks so as to find for yourself that dimaiologyclass blogspot urges a no holds barred discussion. Ask me questions, write your praises or hate mails, tell me that I am a gift or a shithead-posing-to-be-a-prof-but-not! ..That I am the best thing that happen to La Salle or the worst teacher, most mediocre-uninteresting person! Tell me that our class sucks! Tell me that you like it. Tell me in the shield of your false name if you like. Write anything. Even if your personal concern has no relevance to class in general. But one thing I will ask.. May it be the good or the nega, please be honest..

Rest assured that all your questions will be answered honestly, sincerely, at times boldly and frankly; and always -- passionately. There will be instances that my response will come days after your original post. But don't see it as dwindling interest on my part. I blame it on the sked. Maagang natulog ang mag-amang si Boy Bakat at JM. Nag-double lock muna ng mga pinto, bintana, etc si Boy Bakat bago umakyat ng kwarto at tumabi sa anak. Kinaumagahan, wala sa tabi nya si JM. Pumunta sya sa CR, sa kusina, at sa lahat ng parte ng bahay. Wala si JM. Ilang beses nyang hinanap pero wala si JM. Naka-double lock pa den ang mga pinto, bintana, etc.

Tuwing week-end ay umuuwi si Redenthor Gomez (also known as "Reed") sa Batangas. Sa Manila, sa Buendia Jam Station ay sumakay sya ng bus. Napansin nya na there is something "orange" sa hapon na yun. Sa ambiance and atmosphere. Napansin den nya ang usual na eksena pagsakay pa lang nya ng bus. Mga nagtitinda ng singaling, banana chips, mumurahing burger, mineral water, C2, dyaryo, at iba pa. May nagsasalita den sa gitna tungkol sa salita ng Dyos. Pagkatapos ay manghihingi ng donasyon. Inisip ni Reed, kasabay ng mga nagtitinda ng singaling at mineral water at C2, may nagbebenta den ng salita ng Dyos.

I am writing this in lieu of the recent developments (and at the same time, under-developments) concerning the things we already know by now but wasn't supposed to happen. The things we almost always value in spite of mainstream practice of ripping-off others' works. Yes, that is -- originality. And you twin that with credibility. I was about to sleep the night before and sleep on the idea that there is an issue that's been bothering us. But my hand and the heart is telling me to do some writing and speak some shit before it fades. It hurts me because the students involve in this brouhaha belong to the class that I love. The class that I am proud of. The first class that i handled in the recent fulfillment of the one-third of my long-time career dream. Yes, one-third. Aside from teaching, the other two are filmmaking and country presidency. But that's another story, or blog post.

But of course, this is not to say that whenever naysayers tell some things, it will be the absolute truth and the only truth. Suffice it to say, let's give everybody the benefit of the doubt. And i also hope that by the time of this posting, everything's under the bridge, everything's settled and solved.

I don't want to dwell much on the things Sir P is undertaking regarding this eventualities. I am sure he is as much or more bothered than i am. And I am sure too that he is doing the right things and decisions to pacify, make sound judgement, and put everything in order. Trust your department head. Some will agree but some of you might not agree on some decisions. But trust Sir P. Don't discount the idea that the wisdom he have is more in

I remember a certain case before we graduated in San Beda. One student was probe and proven that the thesis he submitted was not of his writings. That he only copied it. The student not only was given a failing grade but was kicked-out of school. The school authorities said that it was not only the department that he cheated. It was a direct insult to the whole San Beda institution. That the incident may take as a precedence to other batches and generations the coming school years if taken lightly. Thus, the appropriate action.

Of course, I am not saying that the above case is the same with ours now. Yes, some issue parallelism. But the case at hand is not proven yet. The word "proven" or with the word "yet" will off course, depends on what fence or ground you are standing. Also, the word "guilty" or "not gulity" can vary definitions. There are thousands and thousand inmates that are rotting in jail because our legal system says that they are guilty but they are not. Again, i am not your moral counselor. Far from that.

And to keep it hanging in there..

anywayz, your piece is really a piece. Thank you for sharing us your experience as related to this incident. No matter what would be the result of this matter is entirely debated and perhaps, it is already out of anyone's hands. As to Sir P, I would not dare judge him, as I always kept in my mind that he has been very generous and understanding to us throughout of these four years.
Let’s just hope that the post won’t deliberately open the still-fresh wound yet. As for prisons, some of us are prisons of our making, yes?
Thank you for giving us importance and a considerable part on your experience as a teacher. Hell, I didn’t what was coming when we first met you. But I guess everything goes well with time, as they say.
As this may be my final post in response to your final post, I guess you will give the liberty to make myself still fairly unknown (as I really would prefer to be not known). I don’t why but it made me feel excited as if we’re playing a hide-seek game. It was quite thrilling, even though so I recalled I time that you quite frustrated with me. Guess I kinda overstepped my bounds.
I’m sorry if I bothered you with seemingly endless quack questions. In a sense it was kinda of your fault, you gave us the medium (this blogspot) and maybe I did abuse it to certain intent. Though I never intended to deliberately spur your attention to what we should be discussing, it was fun learning this by you responding to questions.
Lastly, Einstein did not need to worry about the future – he was a genius. It’s hardly relative if you’re leading a monotonous life without something to shock you on the way.

It's almost half the sem and ngayon lang ako nag-post. I am very sorry my 2nd year students for the schedule of your dirty-looking-bigotilyo-professor is swelling like a bushwhacked tornado. But rest assured that enthusiasm is not affected :)

And before i forget,i will explain here things that i discussed but maybe you were absent the saturday i said this shit. Your midterm exam (i mean,project,come january 17,saturday) will be a 10 minuter news program. Total running time is an estimate. It is not an strict rule. But make it beautifully phased. And yes,like a true newscast:)

Groupings were done prior to this post so ask your classmates regarding this if you happened to be absent that time.

But before the 17 is january 10. You will submit your money shots. Same day that we will be having editing crash course. For the details of the money shots project,ask your groupmates or classmates.

it has been days now that i'm writing and preparing for this last post (at least for this sem, and specifically for this class). but i was able to wrote only introductions. yet melodramatic, but the truth is i can not find the right words to say my true emotions saying bye-bye to you. i am happy that i've met you mga repapips and repakols at kayo ang una kong naging mga estudyante. and now, nalulungkot ako kasi tapos na ang sem :(

let me start by saying na after all that has been said and discussed.. pagkatapos ng mga keme kemeng formula at mga ganito at ganyan sa kung papano ang paggawa at pag-create ng ganito ganyan, papano ang chever sa camera, sa edit, at kung anu-ano pa..

one of u asked in the earlier post, "is there a scientific scientific method for effective writing?"
first, writing is not a science. so u can't have it that way :)
many books and many articles say something about how to write and how to be creative and some other how to's but of course, u can see that unlike skills, hindi naituturo ang talent. ang mga librong katulad ng "trip to quiapo", etc.. ay nagpapakita at naglalahad ng mga examples at karanasan ng pagsusulat pero aminadong hindi sapat ang manual na yun para makapagturo ng pagsusulat or ng pagiging creative in general.

ang pagsusulat and/or ang pagiging creative (kung anumang discipline) ay nakukuha sa loob ng ilang taong pagbabasa ng kung anu-ano, panonood, pagiging observant sa buhay, etc.
it's a way of life. it is passion. it is love. it is not a work, it is a vocation.

and i am not saying i have that. maybe, for some, they can appreciate what i have, they can appreciate what im saying or what im writing. but for for some, im just saying bullshit. ganun talaga, may iba't iba tayong appreciation ng beauty. and that what makes it cool :)

and talking about work and vocation, isa den sa tanong ng isa sa inyo sa blogspot is:
"which is better - writing as job or as a hobby?"

that is always my problem. and i think will always be :)
hindi talaga ako writer as an employee. the way it should be. at least, in writing for abscbn. syempre, yun ang nagpapasweldo, dapat kung ano ang gusto nila, yun ang isusulat. pera nila yun e. hired ka para gawin kung ano gusto nila. pero yun na naman.. the emotional me..
i always act and think of myself as the writer artist rather than the writer employee. pero kung mananatili akong ganun, masasaktan at masasaktan ako plage sa mga concept na binabago dahil kelangang gawing mas bakya, kelangang gawing mas naiintindihan ni aling bebang, etc.
una kong segment sa wazzup, naiyak ako nang makita ko on-air. ibang iba yung ginawa ko sa nag-air. inaway ko yung kumatay ng segment ko. isa sa mga bossing ko. and kung nabasa nyo na yung reply ni squid villanueva sa post na 'to.. hindi pa nya nagagawang mang-away ng bossing dahil nabaril ang concept..

pero bahala sya sa buhay nya. kapag inaaway kami, aawayin din namin.
ngayon, wala na sya sa abscbn. siguro, nakita den nya na hindi sya para sa ganitong work. before sya umalis, may dalawang show na halos sabay nag-off-air. sya pareho ang e.p.

syempre, okay that's not to discount yung group nina jaeda na days before that ay nauna nang nakatapos, at nung iba pa na maayos at maagap na nakatapos. yun ang ideal!
pero pag dumating sa inyo ang time (at least kung nasa T prod kayo sa totoong buhay) na nangarag kayo, na nakakaloka ang time-pressure dahil sa mga di maiiwasang bagay, don't forget - u should air it. that's the practice. may mga pagkakataong ang Nginig ay nagsho-shoot pa ng umaga and gabi, kelangan nang mag-air. ngarag sa edit. pero walang valid reason para hindi mag-air yun come the airing time.
lalo na kung mapupunta kayo sa news. syempre, hindi naman pwedeng gawin in advance ang news :)

i talked to ekah about this. and i told her that i was hurt. u said, "baket yung ibang nag TV prod den dati, hindi naman ganito. nagmumukhang scriptwriting class tayo".
kahit kelan kasi, hindi ko kayo ikinompara negatively sa iba. because i understand and i know na may iba't iba naman tayong backstory and appreciation on things. and to compare me with other professors having different module albeit the same subject is wounding. i don't know kung nakikita nyo ang effort and passion ko.. but i was and i am doing more than what i should do as a professor. nakikita nyo ba yun? naaapreciate nyo ba yun? na kelangan ko lang ay magturo. that's it. but i always consider kung mag-eenjoy ba kayo, kung relevant ba yung nasa books, kung updated ba, kung gusto nyo ba or kelangan nyong malaman yun, etc. Sabi nga ng iba kong repa, baket ka pa sumasama sa shoot? baket ka pa namomroblema kung nakuha na ba nila ang tamang software sa pageedit or pagko-convert? baket mo binibigyan ng ganitong raw mats? baket mo kinokontak si ganitong personality for them, etc? etc..
hindi ba dapat hihintayin mo na lang ang pagsa-submit nila.. na kung wala, e di wala.. walang grade.
Pwede naman yun!

narinig nyo na 'to, sa iba, madaming beses na.. and naaappreciate ko ngayon. na hindi lang ang estudyante ang natututo upon entering the classroom. ganun den ang teacher. i can not know what's on your mind when ur not talking.

naalala ko, after graduating, nag-direct ako ng isang play dati sa sanbeda. ilang beses ko nang nabanggit yung salitang "riddance" kasi ang gagamitin naming music ay good riddance ng green day. ang pronounce ko ay "raydans". after ilang meetings and practice, isa sa mga actor ang hindi na nakatiis, "sir, ridans" (ang tamang pronunciation).
fuckin kewl!
kung hindi nya nasabi yun, baka hanggang ngayon, mali pa den pagbigkas ko ng riddance :)
trivial lang naman yun. pero it means a lot to me.

kaya naloloka ako sa mga teacher namin dati (or mga bossing ngayon) na nagagalit pag itinatama sila.
syempre, hindi maiiwasan yung initial reaction. na baka sa una, magalit or masaktan or ma-shock or hindi matanggap. pero di ba, dapat, upon realizing things, kung valid naman ang point.. why not di ba :) the first step to responsibility is disobedience!

hindi ko na sana ilalagay to kasi pinsan ko si kokay. and it may appear bias. pero hindi ko pa man estudyante si kokay, kahit nung batang bata pa sya, nag-uusap na kami ng tungkol sa anime, literature, art films, etc..
and i am very pleased nang makita ko ang writings and other creative efforts nya sa klase. i can't even write at that level nung nasa college pa ako. nagsusulat na ako sa school paper nung high school pa lang pero pag binabasa ko ngayon, konti na lang yung mga sinulat kong nagugustuhan ko pa den hanggang ngayon :)

may sense of responsibility and judgement call.

kung sakaling may ka-badtripan ako sa inyo, mababadtrip ako sa inyo because of the reason kung anuman yun na nakaka-bad trip. hindi dahil sa estudyante ka at ako ang teacher nyo. kaya yung reaction ko kung magagalit ako o matutuwa o maghihingi ng sorry sa bata man o sa magulang o sa pulis o sa boss ko,

and eto yung binyag ko sa pagtuturo :) fuckin' kewl!

are artistas picky pipol?
that's what you can call "falacy of hasty generalization". katulad ng notion na "artists' temperament". Obviously, the premise is problematic. Just as it is true that there are temperamental persons, there are temperamental artists :) so, may mga artists talaga na temperamental. pero hindi dahil artists sila. kundi.. dahil temperamental sila as a person. same is true with artista. may mga picky talaga na artista. pero picky sila na tao. hindi lang na artista. just as there are picky na mga taong hindi naman artista :)
so those attitudes, they are not the monopoly or the synonyms of being an artista. i hope u get what i mean :)

generally, i don't like those localized tv series..
parang ang dating sakin.. wala na bang maisip na original? hindi na ba kayang mag-create? ganito na ba kabobo ang mga writers ng pilipinas na wala nang maisip na bago? or ganito na ba ang mga tv executives, na ayaw nang magbigay tsansa sa originals, na magpapakasafe na lang kasi yun ang asikat so gagayahin na lang?
and in translating, yez, mga writers pa rin ang gumagawa nun..
pero kung hate na naming mga tv writers ang nagsusulat kami ng mga kwentong sobrang pinapakialaman ng management, mas lalo na 'tong mga ganitong localized tv series. kasi, hindi na kami mag-iisip ng kwento, yun na yun.. ilo-localized na lang.. di ba, bobofication. and isa ako sa mga maaangas at matataas ang sungay na umaayaw sa mga gano'ng project. but of course, may mga writers tayo sa pilipinas (and i don't blame them because siguro, mas malaki ang pangangailanagn nila ng pera.. may pamilya o kung anuman) nilulunok na alng ang pride. and actually, a number of them, nag-eenjoy na den sa mga ganun..
haayyyy... i rest my case :)

Diretso ng cAnteEn yung batang nakakuha ng boo. pinakita nya yuNg book sa kalaro nya. tinakOt sya ng kalaro nyang bata. Nagalit yung meh ari ng boOk sa kanya. Iniwan na lang nya sa CantEen.

2. tapos napulot ng Canteener nung nlinis nya.

3. SaktOng itatapon na yung bOok saktong daAn si Gay. nakita nyang maganda yung bOok. pinulot nya at nadiscoVer yang maganda yung boOk.

4. Sa mundo ng GoTh clan, naguusap yung mga elders tungkol sa mga nagyayaring kaguluhan sa clan nila.

11. pupuntahan ni Father si Janitor para kmustahin about sa traboaho nya sa skul. Nagpapasalamat siya kay Father dahil ito ang nagpasok sa trabaho nya.

12. Habang nasa opisina ay nagkwekwentuhan ng kanilang mga bUhay2 sina gAy at Jose MariE at panay may napansin si Gay sa mga style ni JoSe Marie. Mahilg ito sa black kaya nagalala agad si gAy. Nalaman din ni Gay na anak pala ni JoSe mArie si Emily.

week 4 (MaRiz)

1. Nagugulat si Emily sa sinasabi ng JanitoR. Naisip niya kung bakit sinabi ng Janitor iyon sa kanya.Sino sa mga Janitor na mga ito?

2. Pagdating ni Emily sa bahay ay sinalubOng siya ng kanyangkapaatid na si Claire na naglalaro ng sleliton habang ang nanay nya naman, si LeOnor ay nagluluto ng DinugUan. Gabi nAh ngunit wala parin ang kanyang ama.

3. Sabay na naglalakad sina Jose MAriE at Gay. Patuloy parin ang kwentuhan nila hanggang sa inaya ni JosE mAriE na maghapunan sa bahay nila.

=mga eksena sa bahay ng Goth Family, naging close si gay sa gOth famiLy pero meh halong pagkawirdo ang nararman nito.

4. nADISCOVeR ng messAnger na ang pamilya pla nina Emeily ang kEy hOlder na tumakas sa kanlang cLan. Nagkakagulo na sa mundo ng mga goth.

5. Habang si Emily ay nagmumuni-muni sa kanyang kwarto tungkol sa sinabi ng Janitor ay naisip nya lahat ang panaginip nya fRom thE pAst at yung totoOng nAraramdaman nya kay hipHop boi.

6. Pupunta muli si HipHop bOi upang magpasalamat sa lahat ng advise nito sa kanya kaya siya naliwanagan tungkol sa pananaw ng pag-ibig nya kay Emily.

7. Eksena sa loob ng opisina. Ipapakitang nagiging close na talaga sina gay at Jose Marie. Unti-unti ng nakikilala ni gay kung sino talaga ang pamilya ni JosE mAriE.

8. Gabi na at hindi parin makutog si Gay kaya sinubukan nyang tingnanang liBro at bawat simbolong makita nya ang bawat simbolo ay pumapasok sa isip nya ang GoTh family. kinikilabutan siya at natatakot (cliffhanger ng wik 4)

9. Nilapitan ni Emily si Janitor upang komprontahin si Janitor "sino ka at anong alam mo sa amin? sa Akin?"

10. Naging misteryoso si Janitor ngunit hindi nya mapigilan ang magsalita tungkol samundo ng mga gOthic.

11. samantala, sa mundo ng mga eldEr gothic ay pinagiisipan na kung paano hahanapin ang pamilya nina Emly at kung bakit sila umalis sa mga ito.

12. Masusunig ang basketball coUrt sa sUbd. kung saAn naninirahan sina Emly sa hindi malamang kadahilanan. Sumugod ang taOng bayan sa bahay ng Goth Family at pinalayas sila sa Subd. pro pipigilan naman sila ni hiphop bOi.

Ito po yung story na naisip natin last meeting...

May isang bampira na dumating sa isang komunidad, gutom na gutom ang bampira kung kaya't may kinagat agad siya. Habang kinakagat niya ang kanyang biktima ay may nakakitang isang batang lalaki. Hindi niya ginalaw ang bata at nagmadaling tumakbo ang bampira. Nang matagpuan ang bangkay lumaki at naging isang seryosong isyu ito sa komunidad na iyon. Ang mga namumuno sa komunidad ay nagpadala ng maraming ronda at nagdeklara rin ng curfew sa barangay. Sa isang lumang/di patapus na bahay naninirahan ang bampira, sa umaga ay tulog ang binatang bampira at sa gabi naman siya nagmamanman upang makakuha muli ng biktima. Dahil nasa bakanteng lote ang tinitirahan ng binatang bampira ay madalas pumupunta doon ang isang batang lalaki dahil sa mga puno ng prutas na walang nagmamay-ari (siya ding bata saksi sa insidente nung isang gabi). Nakilala nung bata si binatang bampira ngunit hindi niya ito kinatatakutan sapagkat hindi rin niya alam na siya pala ang may kagagawan ng pagdami ng bangkay sa lugar nila. Si binatang bampira ay naging malapit sa bata sapagkat naaalala niya dito ang kanyang nakababatang kapatid. Unti-unting natatagpuan ang mga bangkay sa loob ng komunidad at naalarma na ang mga tao doon. Pinagbuntungan ng galit at paghihinala ang binatang (bampira) dahil nung siya'y dumating sa barangay ay lumalaganap na ang ganung klase ng pagpatay. Todo tanggol ang bata sa kanyang kaibigan at hindi siya naniniwala na ang kaibigan niyang binata ang may kagagawan ng mga iyon. Nalulungkot si binatang bampira sapagkat ang isang taong tumuturing sa kanyang kaibigan ay hindi lahat alam ang tungkol sa kanya lalo na sa pagiging bampira niya.

May isang dalaga na nakatira sa barangay na iyon, isa siyang working student sa isang college school. Dahil sa kanyang mga duty ay gabi na siya nakakauwi, kung kaya't sinusundo siya ng tatay niyang barangay tanod tuwing gabi upang makauwi ng maayus. Ang dalagang ito ay mahilig magbabasa ng mga nakakatakot at mga baduy na komiks.

Isang pagkakataon ay hindi masusundo agad ni tatay tanod ang kanyang dalagang anak sapagkat may napabalita na natagpuan na ang may kagagawan ng pagpatay at kasalukuyang hinuhuli. Sinabihan ni tatay tanod si dalaga na mag-intay sa labas ng kanilang paaralan at babalikan na lamang kapag natapus na ang paghuli sa may suspek ng mga pagpatay. Lumipas ang isa't kalahating oras ay hindi pa dumadating si tatay tanod upang sunduin si dalaga. Lumalalim ang gabi at nainip na din kakaintay si dalaga, nagpasya siya na maglakad na lamang pauwi. Sa kanyang paglalakad, sa madilim na parte ng kalsada ay may nararamdaman si dalaga na parang may sumusunod sa kanya. Its been quite a long time since I've posted soemthing here and there's something quite nostalgic about it, considering that as a class, our days are slowly dwindling by...

After that 'drama', there are still something to talk about. Mostly about the teleserye but also the most mudane of all things...

hope things do live up...

1. What does a colorist, showrunner and key grip do?

2. Is it true that artistas are picky people? That they better have this kind of food/water or else they walkout? Are they even allowed to do that on the set?

3. You're a writer. Are syndicated TV shows a help or a nuisance to you when your network carry one? If not, are writers part of the translation team?

this is one of those days that thou i want to say things in intro but i have none to say. so without much further ado:

my pm class,

i saw it in your eyes. so im withdrawing it. u don't have to watch and we will not discuss prison break next saturday. but the assignment, comments and the opening scene(s), is still to be checked. and im checking it now as of this writing.

and to all of you,
as i've mentioned the last meeting, please attend class as much as you can. many of our assignments and future projects are very dependable with the prior saturday of submission. other mechanics of this nature, i've explained in my earlier post (long and winding fart) so please read it too.

u have ur activity this coming saturday, so see u next saturday, september 13.
i will be posting again next wednesday here in the blogspot some reminders and/or assignments if deemed necessary.

first sem's half way. and the party's just started. or maybe you're not enjoying the ride :(
but i hope you are :)

again, i am very sory for all the discomforts i may have brought you.
if it's not too much to ask and hope, it is in my highest aspiration that you too are having fun and in the process are learning some things too while at it :)

before i jump to the next agenda of tonight's blog post, let me just say my general reaction to your documentaries.

1. let me start with a positive note. i have noticed that all of you got it right - the importance of an interesting opening. so kudos to that! :)

2. except for the few that i applauded its rhythm and tone, majority needs improvement. u tend to forget that many times, the audience's idea of a TV watch is - entertainment, more than anything else. your content, more or less, is passable but as i've told you in the earlier weeks, the message is the massage. your delivery matters a lot. it is okay to slice and cut your interviewee's lengthy lines. work on it. learn how to shorten the running time without sacrificing the content as much as possible. always fast-phased it. be audience-friendly.

3. this one i don't want you to forget the lesson:
macko, on the day of submission, was having problems on file conversion and burning dvd among other things. but came the time to pass, he had the copy presented with a slight format difference that our dvd player can not read. thankfully, the laptop can read it.
for me, that was a calculated risk. and it worked.
of course, this is not to discount groups that were able to finished days before that saturday. finishing early is the best option. it should be the practice. but if comes the time of pressure and deadline, nothing beats he/she who beats it.
of course, provided that it will work.
and THAT'S THE SPIRIT!
..the goal this exercise was trying to prove.
in the real trade, you can always complain, why not?! but alongside that, is your worth. one of that is beating the deadline.
this was my same sentiment when one time, one of you was scheduled to report a certain topic but wasn't able to come without a notice.
because no one, including me, will prepare for what should be done by you. in the TV production set-up, the show should air whatever obstacle(s) it has encountered along the way.
but of course, everything's under the bridge now :)

and for lack of better term, i must say that those who passed their documentaries after that saturday, were excused and all reasons accepted.

i would like to believe that for all its worth (whatever it means to you), you've experienced time harassment and other things associated. borrowing chicago bulls' dennis rodman's words - you should not miss twice.

now, goin to main dish:

after finishing our topic on docu, the unscripted height, your final exam will deal on the scripted and narrative rockstardom - tv series writing and production. we will still tackle other TV formats like demo, panel, etc.
but so as u know and to be prepared early, each meeting will be divided in two parts. our regular lessons as scheduled and an hour for the TV series topic - brainstorming; the big arc and subplots mapping; dividing the season to weeks, to episodes and to bodies; scripting; casting and other pre-prod concerns; shooting and editing.

as you requested, there will only be two groups. the morning and the afternoon group. so participate actively during open discussions, i will tell you this now and will not remind you again - everything that you will say during brainstorming sessions will be graded. so please participate. no matter how silly or trivial your contribution may seem, it will nonetheless help in keeping the discussions alive and rolling :)

anyway, let's just cross the bridge when we get there :)

for now, if you have some idle time, please do watch TV series of your choice. that's your assignment for the coming weeks. and we will discuss things on class :)

don't worry about your grades (at least for now, if you can't fully agree on it :)).
just let me see your effort and everything will follow kewl :)
anyway, what's in a grade?! ..it can't even buy you your pair of shoes!

i was doing my astral travel last week when i saw some of you leaving your house almost midnight before the blinding rain.
like the vampires of the west or the sigbin of the south, my friends here from abscbn was doing their rounds in the compound looking for coffee so as to awaken their blood and consciousness. hindi na tayo sanay ngayon sa sikat ng araw sa umaga. masakit na sa mata. at kulay pula na ang default mode ng ating paningin.
gabi!
..ito ang working hours. and it will be an invalid alibi to be late during night's meetings. but a late morning showing up is understandable.
the dark themed concepts are no longer alien to us.
after reading manga and watching many beautiful animes, thanks to japan, our mind is now more open to textured and non-orthodox tv series that bombarded local free channels.

this is the epitome of working class's struggle to watch tv and drink beer while watching their favorite TV shows after the day's work. but of course, not the free tv. but cable shows.

just to remind everybody..

sana hindi nyo pa nalilimutan mga napagusapan natin regarding do's and dont's in making documentaries and in interviewing your resource person :)

..katulad ng:
-wag kayo male-late sa kausap nyo,
-during interviews hayaan nyo syang magsalita hanggang matapos ang sinasabi nya and saka kayo mag-follow-up question after his/her sentences (mas madali ang buhay nyo sa edit pag ganun)
-etc. hindi ko na uulitin, nasa book yan, napagusapan na natin dati pa.

add ko lang, kasi may mga nagtatanong:
-as a matter of courtesy, kapag may tinawagan kayo na source person, magpakilala kayo kung sino kayo, orient him kung para saan ang interview and ano ang relevance nya sa topic nyo. short description lang.
-kung hindi naman nagtatanong kung ano itatanong nyo, u don't have to narrate lahat ng mga itatanong nyo. tsaka na sa actual interview. don't take too much of his time on the fone, ganun den sa actual interview. no complicated camera set-up na maiinip sya sa kahihintay, etc. and be precise and exact sa mga tanong. don't eat too much of his time.
-im worried about the quality of audio. okey sana kung may mic kayo or lapel mic or boom mic. pero kung wala, make sure na nasa matahimik kayong place. super tahimik. buti sana ang stand-upper ng host, pwedeng i-dub. pero ang upsot ng iniinterview, hindi naman pwede i-dub. so make sure na nasa super tahimik kayong place duting interviews. kami nga, kahit may maayos na mic, pinapatay pa den namin ang electric fan or aircon or anumang ingay na akala nyo minimal lang pero sa edit maririnig nyo na may mga nakakairita palang tunog..
-as much as possible, kung mapapatayo ang docu ng minimal lang ang vo, mas okey yun. ang vo is to aid dun sa mga dugtong at segue na hindi magawan ng paraan ng video. pero kugn tatayo ang docu g minimal ang explanation coming from the host, mas okey.
-don't forget your framing and composition. wag basta mag-frame na parang teleserye lang. astig na framing mga repapips. but of course, not too experimental na hindi na maiintindihan ni aleng bebang :)
-i suggest, unahin nyong mag-shoot ng interviews before spiels and vo. kasi may mga lalabas sa interviews na hindi nyo mafo-foresee.
-seq. guide and scripts are just that.. GUIDE. kung anumang mangyaring enexpected sa shoot, yun yun. don't hesitate magdagdag or magbawas ng kung anumang chenes kung sa tingin nyo ay kelangan.
-don't use heavy words if possible. unless yun yung novelty ng docu nyo.
-sa lahat ng pinupuntahan nyo, don't forget, kumuha ng mga establishing shots and pang-insert mats. halimbawa, si mayor ang pinuntahan nyo.. so kuha kayo ng shots ng munisipyo, ng trophies nya, ng mga behind the scenes na kinakausap nya staff nya or kayo ang kinakausap nya, etc.
-shoot in difrent angles if possible. meron kayong details, meron kayong long shot, may mid shot.
-ideally, SHOOT WITH THE EDIT IN MIND. pero kung hindi pa kayo confident sa full script nyo, shoot all the possible footage, interviews,etc na pwede nyong magamit sa edit. madali na lang magbawas sa edit :)
-keep your docu upbeat and tv friendly as possible. And fast phased. Also, don’t hesitate to put humor if necessary. Sa mga host, be camera friendly – presentable. Wala sanang eyebugs, etc. iba yung novelty ng haggard na reporter after nya ma-kidnap ng abu sayyaf at lumabas sya sa camera ng andungis dungis nya. Kasi yun yung benta. But otherwise, keep urself presentable.
-originally, iniisip ko, around seven minutes ang docu nyo. pero kung hindi kaya, tipong around 5 minutes lang, okey lang. wag nyo pilitin i-stretch. dapat fast phased po. and kung tingin nyo naman, hindi kasya sa 7 minutes, na kelangan pa ng mas mahabang running time, walang problema :)
-use only original music. unless may written permission kayo sa owner ng music. so either gumamit kayo ng software na nagce-create ng music or may kakilala kayong banda na wala pang record label at may original silang kanta or kayo mismo ang gumawa ng music nyo.

wala na ako maalala pang reminders for now. basta, when in doubt, ask me agad!

more or less, okey na naman kayo sa shoot e..
kung may mga pagbabago man sa script, editing concerns na yun. basta solve kayo sa mga tanong sa kelangan nyong interviewhin, then it will follow.. makikita nyo na den kung anong mga dapat na segue from one sequence to another (vo man or stand-upper oncam).

the complete and real script will come after you shoot all your interviews, reenactments, video mats, etc.
may mga pagkakataong, during edit, nagbabago pa den kayo ng script. dahil dun nyo lang mararamdaman ang tamang tempo na akala nyo ay okey na noong sinusulat nyo ang script.

okey, alam nyo na naman mga yan..
para lang akong baklang direktor dito na nagtatatalak.. nyahahhaha :)

to be more specific..

1. VEGETARIANISM, the new trend
-wala kayong case study
-hindi ko alam ha.. at baka naman lalabas pag nagawa nyo na, pero hindi gano litaw yung point. na this is the new trend. that this is not only healthy, this is fashionable now.

2. ONLINE GAMES, CLANS AND SEX
-feeling ko hilaw pa yung script. wala pang malalim na digging regarding the subject. may mga napagusapan tayo sa class nung kausapin ko each group, i-add nyo yung mga sinabi ko. like yung makukunan ng real footage yung e.b. and/or s.e.b. nila, etc.
-okey yung idea ng seq 1, pero sorry ha.. nakokornihan ako :) sori :) ..baka u can come up with a difrent situation or twist :)
-madalas kayo gumamit ng heavy words like tunghayan, pagyabong, etc.
avoid it. online games kayo, so dapat mas youth oriented ang gamit nyo na words, don't use heavy words

3. SUPER HUMANS
-hindi pa script yung hard copy na nasakin. nasa gitna sya ng sequence guide and script. yung vo and spiels, even yung ibang mga tanong, explanation pa lang sya ng kung anong lalabas sa script.
-sa page 2 nyo sa hard copy, meron dun positives and negatives of having this kind of ability. yung iba, nakakapagnakaw dahil sa hypnotism, etc. You can add real accounts. research. mga tabloid (or baka pwede den sa totoong news talaga) headlines (and news) ng (name of tabloid or newspaper or online news).

4. SA PANAGINIP NG KATOTOHANAN
-sorry, but i think you have to change your title. it is too mowelfund.
-sa 1st page, yung intro of host (marisz and j.e), THAT WAS FUCKIN GOOD! ..there is an illusion na naka-fast-phased ang blahblah :)
-wala kayong expert's side. something na pwedeng magpaliwanag academically and objectively, pwedeng mag-analyze ng mga pangyayaring ito.

5. KOMERSYAL
-VERY GOOD!
-ask ko lang pala, sino iinterviewhin nyo sa UB? im sure u know it naman pero sabihin ko na den.. interviewhin nyo kung sinumang may kinalaman sa commercial nila. wag naman from a random lang na estudyante dun.

6. TALISAY BATANGAS
-malilimutin lang ba ako o wala pa talaga :) ..ano title nyo?
-okey na mga questions nyo.
-yez, i agree, let's make this docu gov v friendly :)

7. ATHEISM
-add lang natin yung kwinento ko sa inyo na case sa US
-add den natin interview with a Philosophy prof. some philosophy of religion teacher

8. TAKDANG ARALIN
-simula pa lang, lunod na sa vo and spiels. pwede pang i-shorten :)
-seq 4 ..misdirection. as well, seq. 6, "sila pa ring responsable sa pagpapanatili ng kalinisan sa buong paaralan".
ang lumalabas kasi, kaya bumababa ang kalidad ng edukasyon kasi pinaglilinis ng school ang mga bata. it is not the issue. napakadaming reasons. research on this.
-isa pang kelangang iresearch.. ano ang actual numbers. gano tayo kababa in compare to international standards, etc. pang-ilan na ba ang pilipinas, etc. sa research makukuha ang exact numbers.
-okey yung interview sa dep ed (or ched)
-i suggest you change the title

9. STUDENT AGENT
-good intro spiels
-ooppss.. yung mga sumunod, may mga heavy words na like "sa kabilang panig ng daigdig," etc. u dont use this kind of words in conversation :)
-nakupo.. tapos na pala yun.. I think kulang pa ng lalim. lagyan nyo ng case study. and lagyan nyo den ng mga negative effects. (and of course positive effects)

10. LABAN SA KARAPATAN
- very good, simula pa lang may research na agad. may pinaghuhugutan ang isyu. add nyo lang pala, kung san nyo nakuha ang research.. "ayon sa ____________(anong survey ito at kelan? study sa pilipinas o international scope?) 40% ng lalaki at 32% ng babae ang nagkakaroon ng relasyon sa kaparehong kasarian"
-ahdunno if its okey or not pero kahit sa mga unang spiels nyo pa lang, kitang kita na agad ang biast for same sex marriage. ok ang stand. pero ang worry ko, pag simula pa lang ay ganito na, baka mawalan ng kredibilidad ang report. by this time kasi (sa part na ito ng docu, the 1st parts), wala pa gaanong todo info and interviews. pero parang buo na ang isip ng docu na mail ang simbahan. sana sa mga unang parts, expositions muna ng ng isyu. and ang pagpapahayag ng pagiging biast, mas kewl kung ang blah blah ay manggagaling sa resource persons :)
-ang title, baka we can come up den with a new one. biast na agad, feeling ko
-more or less, ok naman e (in general) :)

11. BLOGS
- as u said, problematic pa kayo sa daloy ng script nyo.. ayusin nyo na muna ang mga tanong. then hopefully, the right script will follow.

12. TATTOO
-wala ako nare-rcvd sa email (dimaiologyclass@yahoo.com) updates from you. but we have initial talks na regarding this topic. so shoo tnyo na den. but pass nyo na den yung kelangang i-pass.

dun sa mga defined na naman ang topic and concept, kahit hindi pa gano nalilinawan sa kabuuang script, shoot nyo na den. at least dapat alam nyo kung ano yung point ng docu nyo. i really suggest unahin nyo mga interviews. napakadali na ng spiels and vo pag okey na kayo sa interviews. at least, kayo na lang yun.

tama ka, sabi mo nga, "its a good sign cause we're not just a class who nods at things, we try to ask questions".
and nung unang mga meetings pa lang natin, yun na agad ang gusto kong makita :)

noong EDSA 2, naalala ko, sa isang TV interview, iniinterview si.. nakalimutan ko na :) ..noel cabangon ata or gary granada ..tungkol ito sa pagkakawatak watak ng opinion regarding erap, people power, etc..
ang sabi ng iniinterview, "mas mabuti pang hindi magkasundo kaya nagdedebate at nagdidiskusyon ang mga matatalinong tao kesa mga bobong nagkakasundo". of course, he was not pertaining to the academic kabobohan. dahil hindi naman yun ang totoong sukatan ng pagiging henyo. he was pertaining to political dumbness and numbness.

and u said, discipline.
that's the very reason i never enrolled in any ROTC course! ..nakalagay kasi sa ROTC chenes namin na "dito sa ROTC, matututo kayo ng disiplina. tuturuan namin kayo. didisiplinahin namin kayo".
fucking shite!
the only discipline we have is self-discipline. other disciplines are simply ..well, not discipline at all. it is fear. buti sana kung respect.
so i never enrolled sa ROTC.
hindi sya para sakin :) ..pwedeng nagwo-work yun sa ibang tao pero hindi applicable sakin. ganun lang naman yun e. the very concept of democracy.

in one of the columns of dean jorge bacobe, tungkol ito sa pagkakaro'n ng bayad ng text messaging. kasi if u can recall it, nung una.. dati ..walang bayad ang text message. then nung i-announce ng smart and globe na magkakaron na ng bayad ang text messaging, andaming umangal. welga-welgahan pa sa kalye, sa blogs, sa columns, etc. sabi sa argument ni dean bacobo.. that's the very principle of democracy! ..that's the very reason nagwo-work ang democracy sa pilipinas.
babayadan mo ang mga goods na kelangan or gusto mo. kung may libre, ayus! ..pero kung kelangang bayadan.. babayadan. kung ayaw mo, then don't purchase it.

Yo! Hehehe makulit talaga kame...sometimes its a good sign cause we're not just a class who nods at things, we try to ask questions,
I remember one time in our recollection, our facilitator commented that there will really be times when we won't just stop arguing because we have our different opinions. But regards to the last post in this blog, yung before this (bakit nga ba dito ako nagpopost?!) I think classmates, excuses are excuses, hindi pagiging inquisitive. There will alwyas be time that things won't go our way, and I have learned that lesson the hard way, (kaya nga minsan e hindi tayo nagkakaintindihan kasi gusto natin nasusunod lahat ng gusto natin),
Hindi matuturo sa skul ang disiplina, hindi yan maitututro ng kahit na sinong teacher, it just comes with time and sometimes we feel frustrated and say its just unfair when in fact hindi lang naman talaga nasunod ang gusto natin. We blame others for the faults that we have inflicted upon ourselves. So classmates as future professional, i think we better stop bitchin other people and say dumb excuses like "bakit yung iba?"

the plan versus the popular request

u know what's my 1st part.. to answer questions :)

1. OH-M-G! ..may nagkamali ako ng lagay sa group?! sinong kaklase nyo ang nalagay ko sa maling time-slot? im really sorry. my mistake. i need to know asap. email me soonest. or ask ur classmates that know my number then text me kung sino yun.. asap!

2. number of members for each group.
i really thought that my math is right. here's the equation. for those topics that i think will consume much energy and money because the scope is too big or the logistics are far or concepts needs to be defined more (whatever is applicable), i put more members. for those topics that are more defined, or with lesser scope, or with lesser research needed, or with resource person already in-contact with the members (whatever is applicable), i put less members.
also, per group, there are some common denominators with the members. for example, all "poverty" topics were grouped into one; all food topics were grouped into one; and so on and so forth.
by if i am wrong, then i stand to be corrected

3. allan lina, ikaw den ba yung tinutukoy ng item number 1? kasi, meron kang ka-group. sina jaeda abansi, etc ng student agent. so panghapon ka? sorry ha, hindi ko kasi dala dz minute ang records nyo, di ko ma-chek now. kung afternoon class ka, you go to the topic "online games".

now, this is my piece for tonite..

the question with regards to number of members per group is valid, understandable and comprehensible.
but it lacks emotional logic and true math wit.
now that i made a mistake of allan lina putting him on morning sked instead of the afternoon class (kung sya nga 'yun. but i have no way of checking it this minute because i don't have the record at hand), all the morning class groups have members of either 2 or 3. am i right? no matter how i flip that calculation, it is telling me that there can be no other equation that will arrive at a different arithmetic. if i get a member from morning class group 1 to morning class group 5, then the same number of 2 members will just transfer from one group to another group.

and i don't want to put a morning class student to a group of afternoon class. and vice versa.

now, with afternoon class:
you have members of either 3 or 4. am i right? same explanation above (the morning class' explanation). taking out a member from afternoon class group 3 (and giving it to afternoon class group 1) will just arrive at the same numbers. only now, that group 1 will have 4 members and group 3 with 3 members.
do u get the equation?

now, the larger scope
(at least in numbers),
u may ask, "why is it that morning class have seven topics approved and the afternoon class with only 5 topics to produced?"
in your logic (which of course is mathematically logical, i admit), this is the very cause why the afternoon class is enjoying 3 to 4 members compare to morning class' only 2 to 3 members. am i right?

..(answer first that question before u proceed)

now that u answered "yes",

i will say that it is a disappointment.

your inquiries are mathematically logical, but in my honest view, it lacks emotional logic and true grip of the grit.

and i will say that i was surprised that some in the morning class were in question too with regards this concern.
my morning class, here's the score: the reason why you have many topics to produced is because you have many topics that passed!

of course, this is not to discount the afternoon class' topics. u know the considerations. the docu should not only be meaningful. there are many important topics that was submitted.
but other considerations are:
it's commerciability, its newness, its duplicity with other topics, its feasibility, etc.
there are important topics with its commercial viability but it duplicates other topics, or it doesn't duplicate other topics but its feasibilty is questionable.
those concerns.

other concern is: time constraint and group members with different class schedule and group members not the usual groupmates-friends

i hate to say this,
but,
do you not realize how much leeway i exerted on your past assignments, projects, absences, tardiness, etc?
i do not want to dwell much on this because this is a self-serving shit on my part. but just try. try to look at its wisdom..
why is it that prior to this project, i was in so much margin in giving you so many chances of passing late and wrong assignments, giving you make-up reports and quizzes for absences and other limitations.. then on this very important midterm project, im giving you this "inconveniences"?

i do not know if this is comprehensible but here's the map:

just i was giving too much importance on "rhythm-writing" that i almost always give reading materials, video presentations of sample movies and documentaries and writing exercises like the ad nauseam seq. guide, reaction papers, etc.. because i can not teach "rhythm-writing" by merely saying it. that i have to let u do it and experience it.. then revise it and do it again..

this is the same principle im applying now in our docu project.

why did i give u leeway on assignments and other things prior to this? because being time-harassed is not part of the learnings on those certain weeks. other disciplines were the concern during that time.
in the normal school system of professor and students academic relationship, the students should submit on time or else late submission of assignments or projects will not be accepted or graded but with deductions.
but i don not want to be the bitchy-bitchy-grumpy-strict-professor asshole.
i just want you to enjoy the sem and learn some things while at it.

why am i giving u these inconveniences now? because this is our lesson this time.

all of these hurdles like time constraints, alien groupmates, etc are the very elements that are in our module to teach you.
i can always say that in blahblah..
then you will agree and discuss things with me on class..

but as i've put importance on "rhythm-writing" that you need to experience it in order to learn, this lesson on difficulties in order to be taught is thru this.

i asked myself this morning, "do i owe them an explanation?", "is this in the normal system of professor-students academic relationships?"..

no.

but i want to.
and it is in my highest aspiration that u appreciate what we are doing.
it is just not me that imposes things just because the authoritarian orthodox system tells me that as a professor, i will have to do what i should.

this is my 2nd post of the day. well, gabi na ngayon :) hehe :) ..ang corny :)
this is my 2nd post of the day. itz second part. as ive told u earlier, im in a hurry. so i skip the nitty gritty blahblah for a straight-fact-in-your-face-info that needs to be deliver asap!

to begin with, i would like to say thank you for comment(s) ..and i encourage the others no matter how painful and frank your comment might be to please post it :)

i will answer his/her questions and concerns first before i go to docu matterz :)

fuck! ..that was awesome kewl! ..that was a long comment. and a good one at that! i remember a letter i read years ago. that was a long letter. none were the emails or txt or celfone or pager yet. only letters, the old-fashioned way. it was a long letter too. an overly frank, dramatic yet beautifully written one. and it ends with the line, "sorry to write you a long letter. i don't have time to write you a short one."

ahdunno if itz just me. or the importance of the sender. but a wrap-up beautifully written letter as this is a straight-hook-upper-right-punch that melts the heart instantly. too much of the foreplay, huh!?

this is in line with my lectures saying that i give too much importance on the opening salvo of a piece. may it be a literature or a movie or a docu or a theatre play or whatever form! i would just like to reiterate that parallels the importance of the intro is its closing scene. the movie "adaptation", thou not that good a movie to be a sample (at least for me), has a good thing to say about story and storytelling in general. it says, "wow them in the end!" so there you go.

anyway, lumalalim ang gabi'y hindi hinuhukay.. hehe :)

to u, sa nagco-comment.. tulad ng sinabi ko kanina, that comment was fuckin kewl! ..Rhythm is improving! yung content ng comment, syempre honest reaction yan.. kaya hindi ko masasabi and itz not for me to say na if its improving or not. my only comment to the comment as of this writing is the tempo. ganda! :)

1. rather than a docu guide, the hand out is more of a film book page.
ahdunno if i have to repeat this but the basic elements of docu and narratives are the same. their root is the film. contrary to popular belief, it is not the news.
and one thing, we are discussing this docu thing not as indie docu, but as mainstream docu. the documentaries we see on TV. the TV that sucks! ..the television that greatly helps our bobofication! so our docu here is not only documentaries that informs. okey lang sana documentaries that touches heart. but more than that, documentaries that "entertains" ..whatever entertainment means!
im not keeping these lies away from class. from time to time,i let u watch some samples and also, i was telling u my brutally honest comments. of course, im not always right. there's none the monopoly of truth! ..but that's my honest view :)

2. regarding docu and drama..
documentary ideally is real. i see nothing in conflict if u see drama in your docu and air it. if u see pain, then air it. if u see humor, then include it. but please, don't make it scripted and label it as real. ibang usapan ang reenactment. that's why, may nakasulat na reenactment sa reenactment.

3. credibility.
credibility is everything! ..not a hint that your docu is fake, please! it erases all the good things na nakalagay sa ibang part kung may parts na hindi totoo. sa mahuhuli kong gagawa ng ganun, u will fail! that's a fuckin' mortal sin!
i remember our college test papers. in our every philosophy test, finals and midterms, there was the note: 1. be honest, 2. look honest

4. cliche
as much as possible, no cliches. u know what cliches are. always work beyond expectations. and unpredictable. and be bold. try to experiment. (but of course, without alienating the audience. if it's experimental but throws off the audience, then it's nothing but a self-serving-too-personal-piece na dapat ikaw na lang ang makapanood!)

(of course, unless that's the treatment. refrence of cliche as treatment: director ben feleo and director joey gosiengfiao's movies)

5. mowelfund
yez, i don't like their films. i don't like their storytelling. even nick de ocampo. old school and too academic. purely self-serving! the only thing that i appreciate about mowelfund is their cinematography and Raymond Red.
actually, it is not only me. it is a hush-hush among the league but of course none is too vocal and proud to tell that negative remark about an icon.
log on to youtube, watch their samples. watch "etneb" ..and other mowelfund films. ull get a grip of what i mean.
cenon, our friend, the UP film institute head, in one of his class was asking a student about his (the student's) short film.
cenon: anong meaning sayo ng film mo?
student: bahala na po ang audience magbigay ng meaning
cenon: yes, i know and i appreciate that. ako, may sarili akong take dyan sa film mo. etong katabi ko, may sarili ding meaning dyan sa film mo. but ikaw, as the director of that film, ano ang gusto mong iparating?
student: actually sir, it is a personal film na bahala na ang audience umintindi
cenon: yes, sabi mo nga kanina. and uulitin ko, u as the filmmaker, ano ang meaning sayo nyan? ano ang gusto mong iparating?
student: uulitin ko den po sir, it is a personal film.
cenon: u don't get it! and i don't get it as well. ..baka naman it's too personal na dapat ikaw na lang ang nanonood, hindi mo na dapat ipinapakita sa amin!

i have lots of bad things about the mainstream TV and cinema but one thing that i agree with the mainstream is this mantra: connect with the audience!

6. revised sequence guide
as i told u in the earlier post, kung may revision ang group, then ipasa sakin ang revised seq. guide pero kung aprub na sa group ang existing sequence guide, so be it :) ..and also, dun sa iba, medyo iniba ko or pinalawak ang scope.. so yun yung mga kelangang magbigay ng revised seq. guide :)

7. ang tinutukoy mo ay sa ngalan ng tubo? wala nang gory scenes after that. ang mga susunod na eksena ay imbestigasyon, pagtanggi ng pulis na sila ang gumawa nun, mga pinatay after the incident, etc.

8. yes, gustong gusto ko ang pulp magazine. not that all of what they said i agree. many too are bullshit. but what i like about the magazine is its sincerity and balls. hindi kelangang i agree sa lahat ng sinasabi ng isang magazine para magustuhan. pero para sakin, sobrang naaapreciate ko ang lay-out ng pulp, yung rhythm ng writings, yung dark tone, etc.
and si vernon go, i think nasa pulp pa den sya. the last time i check. and galing nya magsulat.

then the week after that saturday ay midterm exam nyo. in between ur exams, pwede nyong pagusapan ang mga sunod nyong hakbang :) of course, hindi ko inaasahan na magsho-shoot na kayo kc midterms nyo yun. sabagay, midterms nyo den naman yung docu natin :)
pero yung mga preparations like kanino camera, sino edit, sinong iinterviewhin, san pupunta, etc. yung mga ganun, pagdating ng sunod na week, dapat plantsado na. kc nakapag-pre-prod na kayo ng 1 week.

the week after your midterm week, august 17 to 22, dapat nagsho-shoot na kayo at nag-eedit. august 23 we will view it. and walang male-late kc kelangang magsubmit ng faculty to dean ng grades ng august 25.
so after august 23 (saturday), gustuhin ko mang may humabol, sa dean na kayo magsasabi :)

yez! so little time so much to do.
that's part of the program. sa totoong buhay mas ngarag pa.

and yez! ..ang mga kagrupo nyo ngayon ay hindi ang usual nyong ka-group. i hate to let u learn this painfully but there's no other way..

and yung iba mas madami, may mas kokonti. yung iba kasi, mas mahirap hanapin ang subjects. yung iba, at least nakausap ko na na may sakto nang iinterviewhin, defined na ang galaw. yung iba naman, malawak ang topics, kelangang mas madami.. mga ganung concerns.

well, for once...I am in complete agreement with you in your "head title" though I admit I'm in conmplete confusion of the topic you are referring to.
anyway, let me thank you for redeeming myself and catching up with my schoolwork. It's quite embarrasing yet thanks for the chance nonetheless.
i have a few things about last meeting - I understand your method of discussing the hand-out by reporting, considering most of the class didn't read it (I am assuming, of course...and I'm not one of them) but I have issues with the hand-out myself.
In my opinion, the hand-out reflected more of the film books I've been browsing (...due to the lack of the idea thing) rather than a documentary guide.
I was expecting more technical stuff but since you have the experience, I can't complain and besides, it's your call.
Mind, your comments are most interesting and amusing though I might agree on a number of them. (Do you have a thing against MOWELFUND? What's with them anyway?)
Further, I don't question why the docu needs the drama (not as in the drama in Private Wars). Life is drama but where do you draw the line? Is credibilty part of that package? Do we even need one? How can we find a story that throws the cliches out the window (in reference to Riles)?
ln lieu of your recent post, what do you mean by a revised sequence guide? Do we edit or add more? I think it's a case to case basis, so I would ask, no, bother you to be specific about each project (with your comments, of course).
lastly, to be honest i'm feeling guilty for monopolizing and dominating the conversation of the blog. so, if you feel like, you can push me off for bugging, bothering and destroying the mood. I would rather have a good telling off than a cold shoulder. besides, i can live with it.

1. is it not unfair that other groups have 4 members, and others, have only three or two? for me, it is unfair when it comes to division of labor, and the financial contribution of each group member.. can't we have EQUAL distribution of group mates?
2. can't we really choose our members? i mean, can't we do it by friends, coz' there are irregular students, and as what you've said, we need to rush this thing. so how can we manage to finish this in time, if we, ourselves, can't manage our own times because of different schedules? and besides, it's really hard to rush, when the other group mates, don't cooperate.. i hope you get what i mean..
3. with regards to the deadline of the docu, is it really for the midterms? just a suggestion, if we work by friends, and if we have equal distribution of group members, maybe we can work better..those were just my comments and suggestions.. the decision is still up to you, and i respect that..

..how do u write kung wala kang maisip isulat :) ..thatz the first question :) ..uhmm, to be honest wala akong exact na sagot dyan :) ..i dont mind letting u know that it is not a formula thing to do. writing is creating and no one can push you to do so. thou some of our great fathers had what they called ..inspirations.
inspiration kapag naba-blangko na sila. for example, quentin tarantino's inducer is music. kapag gusto nyang magsulat at wala syang maisip.. somehow, nakakakuha sya ng inspiration sa music. so, kung ano yung music na naririnig nya, yun den ang nagiging personality ng sunod na pyesa nya :)
si tony perez naman ..sa dilim at gabi, sa alulong ng aso at kapaligiran. ninanamnam lang nya ang paligid at ang mga tao, o ang katahimikan ..and somehow, nakakakuha na sya ng inspiration or ng depression. at nakakapgsimula na ulet syang magsulat :)
ako, habang nakaupo ako sa trono (u know what i mean), andami-dami ko naiisip na kwento at daloy :) ..and syempre, idol ko kc.. tarantino. somehow, totoo e.. music is our soul's food :) , so madaming emosyong ibinibigay ang muisc :)

but with regards docu wrting.. hindi eto ganun kasakto sa fiction wrting. thou as ive said, ang tono at ang ritmo ng maayos na pagsulat ay ganun den..
pero sa docu, may facts na pinaghuhugutan. hindi lang purely creative. u should watch the news, read the papers, check the latest updates, etc..

yez, it is true.. our docu is a hopeful entry sa channel 5. i already talked to program manager. but of course, our docu should be air-worthy. ive already told the class what we mean by air-worthy. hindi lang syempre yung ganda ng intensyon pero more mportant is its materialization :) ..pangalawa, nasa ratings-hungry country tayo, so hindi lang yung dangal ng mensahe at relevance ang pinaguusapan d2. minsan, mas mahalaga yung entertainment value. what we mean by entertainment value? hindi ito nangangahulougan ng pagpapatawa lang. dapat walang laylay. dapat informative. dapat kumokonek sa manonood. those things that ive already told u in class.

and ur question.. ang sabi sa channel 5 ..ABC 5 is signing off na sa august 8.

eto po yung sinasabi ko nung start pa ng class na nabili ng malaysian investor ang lahat ng airing time ng channel 5. way way back, bago pa ipalabas ang plug na yun , na nagsasabing ABC 5 is signing off, sinabi ko na sa inyo yan. tamang hinala ka ha :) ..hindi po ako nagkakamali ng sinabi.
ABC 5 is signing off kasi iba nang management. in days time, iba na ang tawag. magiging TV 5.

sa mga nagsubmit na, okey na yun! ..makikitingnan lang po ulet kung sa sequence guide nyo ay naipakita nyo ang gusto nyong ipakita. halimbawa, may conflict ba? anong isyu? anong problema? anong point? anong thesis? anong ipo-probe and iprp-prove? those questions. after nyong magsubmit ng sequence guide, either magrereply ako sa inyo sa email or magpopost ulet ako d2 ng sunod nating hakbang. i think we should rush this na. considering ur calendar of midterms at kung anu-ano pang kuning kuning na walang pasok chenes chenes :)

anyway, to answer the question..

1. hindi isang docu lang ang gagawin. nate-temp akong gawing individual pero i honestly feel that it will be too tasking considering na may iba pa kayo ginagawa. and for economical reasons na den. at least, pag group, hindi lang isa ang kelangang gumastos. ganun den syempre sa work load. at least, kung group, hati-hati kayo sa gagawin (at least ideally).
so the answer is no, hindi isa lang ang gagawin ng klase. by group po ito :) ..im still studying the scheming kung papano ang groupings :) within 7 days or next saturday, u will know the complete details of this :)

2. access to email account. actually, that was my first option.
but lo and behold, hindi yun ang ginawa ko. may mangilan ngilan kasi na may sinasabi sakin thru email na mukhang hindi gustong sabihin in public. so, for the confidentiality of such matter, hindi ko inopen ang access sa email. but there is a venue for public announcements and comments and posts.. at alam nyo na kung san yun. d2 yan sa dimaiologyclass.blogspot.com

what I meant is what do you do when you need to make a script/film but ideas are not coming. Especially if you are expe4cted to come up with multiple and unrelated ideas?Most importantly, I remembered correctly that the film that we will produce will be aired on ABC 5. however, I manage to watch a somewhat annoucement that channel 5won't be around (I think they will stop airing on August). my friend jeff was teaching video production last sem. and i saw his students' projects. from their first reality assignment until their finals. but i must say, with all the honesty i said to u class, from my outright saying that ur too quiet or that writings are not with rhythm yet, to the trivial nakakaantok ang tanghali or tinatamad ba kayo..

this is my second post. and i hope uv read my first post already. (if not, please read it first)

and what will i say today? class, ur not talking yet.

we had some chitchat during breaks or after class but that was it. none yet is the culture of openness and brainstorming while at the classroom. well, i can not force it to u and be as i imagined. i am just talking aloud.

anyway, as i've told kokay and cheche as well, and to some others in the van, i hope they mentioned to u my reminders..

i must admit that it was not my imagined result. it was my fault and i am very sorry. yes, our tourist guide was accommodating but that was it. he told some trivial-historic-facts but none was my request to push the technical side. again, i am very sorry. but rest assured that this will be offset by our other meetings. none of the bookish-technical-boring-useless facts but more on what's real.

what a great way to start! or so i thought. But i hope it is. As i keep my late night eyes open watching "Prison Break" the past days, shooting and editing for a channel 5 new show on which mother studio ABS-CBN is unaware of, and preparing things to blahblah for the saturday class, it suddenly came my mind the need and comfort of interactivity and inter-connectivity. For there are some things that i may forget to say while on class, i need to call someone from the group and tell the tale. But why not a regular check-up from doc internet? I hope it sits well to you class, but i prepare this site for my late nite reminders on what assignments and errands that i will be asking you. Starting from now, i will be asking you to visit the site at least every week. i will be writing notes each wednesday night in connection with the saturday following the day of posting.

but the effort is not only tantamount to assignments per se. but as i have said, notes and reminders. or more aptly called, footnotes. the academicians and historians called it "cracks in the parchment curtains". in my case, these are the things that i explained prior to writings but failed to dig deeper. so came this website.

on this, i beg the indulgence of me writing shit here and you reading the crap! well, i guess you must know now the difference between a good shit and a bad one. and also, on unlearning things you strongly feel should be unlearned. historian ambeth ocampo said, "there are quite a number of things taught in school that one has to unlearn".

the teacher talking in front of the class inside the classroom is as good or as bad as the priest preaching the word, the police apprehending criminals, or an organizational and corporate boss mandating the rules. the one in front, maybe, is as clueless as the listeners. so hear my musings and runts but react, comment, and disagree at will.
for there is none the monopoly of truth.

now, here are some of the notes (the cracks on the parchment curtains) that you might find helpful or otherwise. but the organizational and hierarchical culture tells you the mandate to read this. if you know what i mean. but if you don't, i won't say it.

- on your tone and rhythm of writing, the class in general, is far from excellent. it is wanting and needs improvement. majority of the students are not adept in writing with rhythm, balls and soul. only a number of you passes the mark. i am sorry if i put it too bluntly and honest. but there's no other way that i can say it. don't write in english english. the language is the medium but the message is the massage. actually, regardless of the language use, write it in beauty. but what is it? i know there is no standard of beauty whatever beauty means. but there is what we call "collective memory". collective memory, without defining terms, is describing and helps in attaining a certain level of understanding among groups. shall we say, the common language. in line with this, i have prepared some reading materials. mostly are reviews or from columnist. the status, if not the person, have attained, at least in the collective memory of the print industry, that the writings are printable, to say the least. the page version of what the television standards called "airable".

- i am just making it clear once and for all that i am giving titles of such tv series or other materials not because i like them. so don't make the mistake of thinking that the review must be favorable to the subject. be harsh if you don't like it. praise if you love it. be honest. be brutally honest.

- the use of words. avoid heavy words specially tagalog jargons like "kaunsabay, datapwat", etc. Use conversational and casual words as possible. The use of heavy words can not save a bad writing. What dictates the level is the rhythm and tone; and most importantly -- sincerity.

anyway, there's none much of me to say more. these things are just trivial you might think. tv prod is not only about writing. it is the whole process of pre-prod to post prod. but it is the pulp essence of it. but of course, you may disagree.

and lastly,

..taste.

i do not want to push and inject my own understanding and appreciation of arts and of things in general but suffice to say, we should arrive and speak the same language before the sem ends albeit disagreements and heated discussions. there came a time that my writings was as dark as night and some of my friends have disapproved it and said that there's too much negativity on me. but i said on the contrary, it is positivity that i was and i am sharing. the dark picturesque unfolding of emotional and depressing stories are only manifestations of us being aware of our lonely self. the realization of being alone even in the presence of the many. the violence that we are not naive with. and the eye-opening consciousness of and towards the others. love, sex, truth, beauty. the true meaning of being a bohemian. a term coined back in the years of renaissance on which my pasay neighbor Jotay (brownman revival's manager) called it "cultured". On which the attainment maybe far but once there, is an astonishment in motion while at the same time fulfilled and fruitful.

as my friend randy (also known as ninja man, our headwriter in Super Inggo animated series) puts it, "something's gonna give!"

next saturday, july 12, submission and screening ng news program chenes nyo. kung dvd ang isa-submit nyo, okey den. i think may player naman tayo sa room. kung mini dv tape, makikidala ng mini dv camera nyo and cable.

after that, same day, i will be asking for your individual concept of a docu. please come up with many topics if possible para mas madami pagpipilian.

I think what lacks in class is a lively discussion of ideas. I myself is guilty because I sometimes also fail to raise my opinion not because I am afraid that you are my teacher (I think we have discussed a lifetime of lesson in our small informal classes at home) but because there is a lack of air of openness in the class because of factors that I am not ware of.

I hope U4A and U4B class develop this culture of openness and just drop their ideas out of courtesy.

And the fact that I am posting this in this blogspot is a proof that I just don't want to raise this idea in conversations but I want to engrave this in this site so that everyone may read it from time to time...

Hehehe...btw...ang gastos ng course na to...hehehe
